St. Pantaleon

As in Orthodox icons, Pantaleon is a beardless young man with medical equipment, but the artist has also given him a sword, emblematic of his martyrdom. Instead of the usual box of medicaments, he has a sort of vial whose shape may have been influenced by the spike often shown in his head when he is among the Fourteen Holy Helpers.
The olive tree to which he had been tied during his torments is coming into leaf; in the Vita it soon bears fruit (Acta Sanctorum, July vol. 6, 420).
The inscription in the halo reads s. pantaleon mart[yr].
